I smelled the smoke at 2am.  We have been ever since watching the fire just a quarter mile from our house, eating up our mountains, the ones we hike daily, the ones we almost lost 7 years ago.  We will spend today packing our house just in case.

I remember living in southern California and it seemed we always had fires.

I once was backpacking in a park that was pretty empty. I thought maybe it was the time of year but I really didn’t see any other people.

The next day at about noon I came across a park ranger who told me to get the heck out of the park! There was a fast moving fire heading my way. I shudder to think what would have happened if I hadn’t come across him at that very second.
